Field Meeting to Bellhaven Bay rescheduled

The postponed excursion from last weekend, to Belhaven Bay, will now take place tomorrow (Sunday 29th September). Meet in West Barns opposite the pub at 11am, the 106 bus from Edinburgh leaving at 9.56 from S St David Street.


The AGM meeting will be asked to vote on two important issues relating to a proposal to change the Society's charitable status to a new form, the Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation or SCIO - please read on.

Petition to save St Andrews Botanic Garden

St Andrews Botanic Garden is under threat of closure due to insufficient funding (see also News Item 4th April).

You can sign a petition against the closure of the Garden by going to and clicking on "Sign the Save the Garden Petition". The petition closes on 5 May and will be presented to the University in June together with a business plan for the Garden's future development.

Death of Dr Richard Pankhurst

Dr Richard Pankhurst died on the 26th March 2013.

Richard Pankhurst, BSBI VC Recorder, a long time member of the Botanical Society of Scotland and RBGE Research Associate, died after a fight with esophageal cancer. His wife Ann, and daughter, Lucy were at his bedside in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary when he died peacefully. Our thoughts are with his family.

The lease of St Andrews Botanic Garden expires in September 2013 and the Garden is under threat of closure from this September.

UK PlantSci 2013 is the annual conference of the UK Plant Sciences Federation which was established to showcase the wealth of plant sciences undertaken in the UK.

UK PlantSci 2013 will be held on 16-17th April 2013 in Dundee.

Death of Prof Paul Jarvis FRSE, FRS

Prof Paul Jarvis FRSE, FRS died aged 77 on the 5th Feb 2013.

Prof Jarvis was an outstanding forest scientist, a 1970s pioneer, working in the on the physiology of trees and measuring CO2 and H2O profiles over spruce at a time when no-one else had thought of these things. His influence was truly world-wide, and he will be sorely missed.

Student Dissertation Prize 2012

Philippa Stone, a BSc Ecological Science (Hons. Forestry) student from the University of Edinburgh, was judged the winner of the 2012 student dissertation prize with a project entitled “The effect of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) silviculture on stand structure and epiphytic lichen abundance in Glentress Forest”.
