Field meeting: Melrose, Urban Flora, River and Abbey

Location

Melrose

Leaders

John Grace

Date

Sunday, 17 June, 2018 - 10:30

To get to Melrose by car take the A68. DO NOT go via Gattonside because you will encounter a bridge closure and be directed on a tortuous diversion. INSTEAD continue on the A68, pass over the river, proceed 1 km to the roundabout and follow signs to Melrose. You may of course come from Edinburgh by train to Tweedbank, but it takes nearly an hour to walk to the centre of Melrose from Tweedbank or 5 minutes by taxi (reserve one from 07729 499 799). Meet in the town centre, in the Market Square at 10:30 h (free parking in front of Bert’s Hotel or nearby, postcode TD6 9PL). We’ll look around the town, and then party ‘A’ will take the 3 km path by the river to Tweedbank while party ‘B’ will proceed 2 km to the southern edge of the town and into the Eilden Hills, taking in the small quarry at NT 55 32. It will be a good comparison with North Berwick Law.

For party A it will be a pleasant walk with some scrambling to the water’s edge, Party B will have some moderately strenuous climbing.

Please come with sturdy footwear, as there are steep slopes and slippery ground. My risk assessment is this:

Risks: public roads, steep slopes, river, sunburn, slippery or crumbly ground, trees (and branches), getting lost, falling, twisting ankles.

To reduce risks: take care when crossing roads or in dangerous terrain, have charged mobile phone if possible, wear strong footwear with grippy soles, maintain visual contact with your group, inform group leader of any disability. You can contact me at jgrace@ed.ac.uk, or by phone 0759 560 4747.

Please bring clothing and footwear suitable for the weather and terrain, a hand lens, map and illustrated flora (if you have one), and a packed lunch.
